Common Home Electrical Problems and How to Avoid Them
Frequent tripping MCBs
If an MCB trips often, it usually means an overloaded circuit or a fault. Don’t just keep resetting it — that’s a warning sign. Reduce the load on that circuit, and if it continues, call an electrician to find the cause.
Overheating switches and sockets
A switch or socket that feels warm, discoloured, or smells of burning is dangerous. It often points to a loose connection, an overload, or a poor-quality fitting. Stop using it and have it checked and replaced with a properly rated, genuine fitting.
Flickering lights
Flickering can be a loose bulb, a faulty switch, or a wiring issue. If it’s not just the bulb, get the wiring and connections inspected — persistent flickering can signal a deeper fault.
Overloaded extension boards
Plugging multiple heavy appliances into one cheap extension board is a common fire risk. Use a properly rated board, never daisy-chain boards together, and avoid running high-load appliances (like heaters) off thin extensions.
Frequent bulb failures
Bulbs burning out too fast can indicate voltage fluctuations or poor fittings. Quality fittings and good-quality LED bulbs last far longer and handle Indian voltage swings better.
How to avoid problems
- Use genuine, ISI-marked fittings and wiring throughout.
- Don’t overload circuits or extension boards.
- Install proper MCBs and an RCCB.
- Get periodic electrical checks by a qualified electrician.
When in doubt, call a professional
Electrical work carries real risk. For anything beyond changing a bulb or a plug, hire a qualified electrician. Safety always comes first.
