Home Electrical Safety: Essential Tips for Every Family
Use only certified products
Start with the basics: every switch, socket, wire, and fitting should carry the BIS/ISI mark. Uncertified electrical goods are a leading cause of accidents and fires. This one habit prevents many hazards.
Never overload sockets
Plugging too many appliances into one socket or extension board causes overheating. Spread heavy appliances across circuits, and use properly rated boards — never flimsy ones for high loads like geysers or heaters.
Keep water away from electricity
Water and electricity are a deadly mix. Never touch switches or appliances with wet hands, keep electrical points away from water in kitchens and bathrooms, and install an RCCB for shock protection in wet areas.
Don’t ignore warning signs
A burning smell, warm sockets, sparking switches, or frequent tripping are all warnings. Don’t ignore them — switch off the circuit and get it checked. Catching faults early prevents fires.
Protect children
- Use socket guards/safety shutters on reachable sockets.
- Keep cords and chargers out of children’s reach.
- Teach children never to poke objects into sockets.
Maintain your wiring
Old, cracked, or rodent-damaged wiring is a serious risk. Have your home’s wiring inspected periodically, especially in older homes, and replace damaged wire promptly with genuine, properly rated cable.
Leave major work to professionals
Changing a bulb or a plug top is fine for most people; rewiring, the distribution board, or anything involving the mains should be done by a qualified electrician. Never take risks with live wiring.
