Understanding Electrical Wire Gauges and Ratings

Why wire size matters

An electrical wire that’s too thin for the load overheats — a leading cause of electrical fires. Choosing the right gauge for each circuit is essential for a safe home. Bigger loads need thicker wire.

What is wire gauge?

Gauge refers to the thickness of the conductor, usually measured in square millimetres (sq mm) in India. The higher the sq mm, the thicker the wire and the more current it can safely carry.

A rough guide for home wiring

  • 1.0–1.5 sq mm: lighting circuits, fans.
  • 2.5 sq mm: general power sockets.
  • 4.0 sq mm: heavy appliances like ACs and geysers.
  • 6.0 sq mm and above: high-load and mains connections.

Always confirm with a qualified electrician for your specific load.

Insulation matters too

Look for good-quality, flame-retardant (FR) insulation that resists heat and doesn’t crack. Quality insulation is as important as the copper inside for long-term safety.

Insist on genuine copper

Cheap wire may be under-gauge or use poor-quality copper, carrying less current safely than claimed. Buy certified wire from trusted sources so the actual rating matches the label.

Colour coding

Follow standard colour conventions (e.g. for live, neutral, and earth) for safe, clear wiring. Consistent colour coding makes future repairs safer and easier.
